The reason I am writing is because I am booking designers for our Chillin’ 12th Anniversary show at Mezzanine Saturday May 1, 2010. This show will feature: 80 fashion designers, 180 painters and photographers, 2 live painters, video installations and a bunch of great DJ’s.Show is from 8:00pm-2:00am

Our Mezzanine shows are really special and we only 2 a year. We normally have an attendance of about 2000 people. Our shows have been free for designers to vend for 12 years and my goal is not only for designers to make money but also get exposure in the press and make connections with boutiques and buyers in the Bay Area. My goal is to support the local art and fashion community here and keep SF a unique place.

I do not charge designers to vend but I do have some expectations and if those do not work for you we are not the show for you. I work really hard for the designers and I do the best I can but your help make a huge difference!

In order for you to do the show this is what I truly expect from you:

1. If you are doing another show that same day you can NOT do my show.
2. I expect ALL designers to get flyers from me
3. expect designers to post the event in their websites.
4. send an email blast about the show
5. post to facebook, myspace, yelp, going, etc.,

If you are Not willing to do this this is not the show for you.

Anyway, I am so excited about this show! If you are interested in the show email me fast as at times I get booked in less than an hour.

This is a very special show because it marks our 12th anniversary + I am opening a store/art gallery. I dream of many years. If you are interested in being part of our boutique also contact me and we can discuss opportunities.

If you have any questions feel free to call me.

Thank you again to all the wonderful people who applied to be on our steering committee. Bazaar Bizarre SF is lucky to have the participation of 10 community members from the local craft scene. They are volunteering their time to help Bazaar Bizarre SF grow as a show and as a community event. We’ll be working together in the coming year to increase BBSF’s presence in the craft community and find ways to better serve vendors and customers alike!

We’re happy to introduce….

Cheryl Aronson is a native northern Californian and owner of Moxieville Press, a division of Moxieville Creative. She is a Graphic Designer, Illustrator and Copywriter living and working in Petaluma. Besides design, illustration and writing, she keeps busy with designing custom letterpress and screen printed stationery and notes for any occasion. As an avid thrift store junkie, her current crafty mission is reviving the corsage. Moxie corsages are spun with vintage delights, kitschical nonsense and whimsy, some a bit irrereverent, others sweet as buttercream icing; but always, nostalgic and one-of-a-kind. The style of 1930’s -1960’s are her favorites, as kitsch and humor can help turn a pear-shaped day right again. Cheryl is founder of the Petaluma Craft Mafia which produces Craftaluma events. You can also visit her at www.moxieville.com and www.petalumacraftmafia.com.

Kevin Clark is a biologist, educator and artisan and hopes to restore some sense of wonder about the natural world. His museum insect displays allow people to get closer to these extraordinary animals in order to learn about their unique personalities and witness their stunning colors, intricate patterns and amazing detail. He has been working with insects in the craft business for over 8 years and has participated in over 100 shows. Bug Under Glass is a SF Green Certified Business and displays only farm-raised insects that benefit forest conservation programs around the world. www.bugunderglass.com & www.etsy.com/shop/BugUnderGlass

Gabriel Colaluca, is a graduate of the University of San Francisco and makes his home in the vibrant Lower Haight neighborhood of San Francisco. Growing up, Gabriel was exposed to the best of art and culture through travel and education provided by his father. These experiences were key in molding his sense of aesthetic and design A sampling of pieces can be viewed at www.thebrownbanana.com Why “The Brown Banana?” Well, one of two things can be done with a banana a bit past its prime: throw it out, or make it into something tasty like banana bread or, perhaps, banana pudding with vanilla wafers! Mmmm. So, we strive to take materials you might find headed for the recycling bin and reclaim them for art’s sake.

NEW PEOPLE is a 20,000 square foot, striking, contemporary building located at 1746 Post Street in the heart of San Francisco’s Japantown (one of only three remaining in the country). The project represents a $15 million investment by Shogakukan, one of the largest publishers of Japan. NEW PEOPLE will become a destination in itself and a source of stimulation for both San Francisco locals and tourists, bringing a new cultural energy to an area filled with history. With three stories above and a basement below, NEW PEOPLE will share Japanese cinema, retail and art, all under one roof! More Information About NEW PEOPLE Here

Many professional crafters have thought about outsourcing their production at one time or another. But if you’re a “solopreneur”, you probably don’t have the time or money to visit factories or cooperatives overseas. So how can you tell which manufacturers are responsible companies, and not toxic sweatshops employing underpaid toddlers? One way to start narrowing down the list is to look at international manufacturing certifications. These certifications are awarded by independent, international, non-profit auditors, who inspect manufacturers’ operations so you don’t have to.

There are number of different international agencies that provide myriad certifications, but here are a few of the most relevant ones to get you started:

The ISO (International Organization for Standardization) provides several well-known certifications: ISO:9000 certifications address “Quality Management” issues, such as product quality and factory management, and ISO:14000 certifications address “Environmental Management” issues, such as greenhouse gas emissions and chemical toxicity.

The FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Provides “Chain of Custody” and “Controlled Wood” certifications, among others, for wood and paper products that are manufactured sustainably.

The ICTI (The International Council of Toy Industries) provides a certification through its CARE Foundation (Caring, Awareness, Responsible, Ethical) that ensures “safe and humane workplace environments for toy factory workers worldwide.” It is currently focused on Asian factories.

Though the ISO no longer publishes an annual list of certified companies (which blows, by the way–please fix this ISO!), many national and state governments/NGOs publish their own lists, which are easily Googled. Here are some (not always current) lists for the U.S., Canada and Thailand.

The ICTI does have a database for factories that are CARE-compliant, but the search fields don’t seem to work very well. I recommend clicking “Submit” without entering or choosing anything, and just browsing the list.

The FSC has a fully functioning, searchable database. Hallelujah!
