AC Clothing and Bags

Amy Cools, 31, was born and raised in California, and has been sewing nearly as long as she can remember. With one home ec class at age 14 as her only formal training, Amy's interest in designing & constructing pieces that fit well, look well, and are perfectly comfortable on all types of human forms, led her to teach herself all aspects of design, pattern drafting, sizing, and construction of garments, and at age 19, to offer for sale her first line of reconstructed vintage designs, and about a year later, her first line of all-original designs. Amy's styles and shapes are most directly informed by her fascination with the human form, and in her years of fine arts classes mostly focusing on figure drawing and painting, she grew to have an instinct for designs that fit and flatter almost any type of figure, and her love of color and whimsy grew out of her own love of art, of vintage and unusual clothing and fabrics, of the distinctly 1980's and 1990's bright, sunny, and bold California style, and of her own strong sense of fun, adventure, and humor. Amy believes in ethical modes of production and keeps her line sweatshop-free, hiring only local sewers to help in production whose work conditions she can observe for herself, and in keeping her line fresh, exciting, and fun and easy to wear.

Loretta Nguyen and James Dawson design and produce screen-printed and stenciled t-shirts and appliquéd hoodies. We draw from an urban aesthetic where multi-culturalism and pop culture merge with inner city decay, graffiti and a lo-tech DIY sensibility. We strive to reflect and celebrate this to some degree in our designs. We derive inspiration from politics, history, media and our sexual identities. We look back at our culture to see what has endured and use it as a road map as to where we're going. As a culture, we are mixing elements from around the world to create the future. It's important, as Americans, that we see beyond the regression of our recent past and focus on the fact that the world unfolding around us is incredibly exciting.

The Brown Banana

About 5 years ago I recognized a vocation to design unique hand made pieces. The first piece was a quilt made from old baseball caps. The project sewed entirely by hand took nearly 6 months. Realizing that this piece while very satisfying was not necessarily marketable, I moved on to producing tables. The tops were made from yardsticks and recycled floorboards and the bases made from old metal hand rails. Again while satisfying and educational, I was left with a work shop of tables and no distribution. Finally I perfected my current project; the production of wearable art made from flatware typewriters, watch parts, old transit tokens and other assorted repurposed items. I formed an independent company "The Brown Banana". Many people ask me, "Why The Brown Banana?" My answer is to cite the art of a chef. Many things can be done with a banana a bit past its prime: it can be thrown out, or made into something tasty. For the past few years, I have recognized, improved and increased my artistic abilities as I strive to take materials one might find headed for the recycling bin and reclaim them for art's sake. All of my "passion projects" have been produced from repurposed items, and it is concept that is now central to my design aesthetic. My pieces are all made from and transformed into pieces that people are forced to interact with by their very nature.

HONEYLUX and PIE BIRD PRESS

HONEYLUX exists because we believe that letterpress is the ideal way to produce engaging, small-scale, and most of all, truly unusual works of art. Everything is based on original drawings (no clip art or found images), and is printed by hand, one color at a time, one card at a time, on a Pearl Press from 1908. These beautiful and sometimes strange cards signal an elegant and unique return to the fine art of correspondence. PIE BIRD PRESS is a little company with a lot of heart. We do all our printing by hand on antique letterpresses and take pride in bold, saturated designs. Our inspiration comes from a love of all things vintage and colorful, and the good things in life that put a smile on anyone's face: fireworks, glazed donuts, puppies, spring vegetables, and plaid thermoses from the camping trips of our childhoods.

Mani Designs

Amber Mahler studied metalsmithing at Penland School of Crafts in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, before she became a full-time jeweler in earnest. Snowed in one winter, she was fascinated with what remained living amidst all that snow. A native Californian, the North Carolina flora surprised and fascinated her and she began her lost wax cast Botanical Series using seedpods, flowers, buds and twigs that she collects on her frequent nature walks. Amber Mahler has been described as one of the most exciting young jewelers working with "live" casting today. Since 2005, when Amber Mahler launched Mani Designs, she has been working with unique materials to create pieces in silver and gold that are both distinctive and sophisticated. Botanicals collected from her walks in nature or grown in her garden, glass powdered enamels, and vintage tins from across the globe feature prominently in her current work. Amber Mahler's botanical series push the boundaries of what is considered possible in that medium, successfully casting flowers and other delicate flora, now featured at the J. Paul Getty Museum Store in Los Angeles and the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, WI, and many other fine galleries, museum and craft stores. Originally from Los Angeles, Amber studied Latin American culture while attending University of California at Santa Cruz, and spent a year in Costa Rica, traveling throughout Central America, doing research on her thesis. Her subsequent travels led her as far afield as India where she lived for five years from 1999 to 2004. Amber now lives in upstate New York with her fiance. Green Commitment All of Mani Design's products are made in the U.S.A. from 50% Recycled/Reclaimed silver and gold. Any non-cast items are made with 100% recycled silver. Mani Designs also accepts customers' old gold and silver for use in new designs. Non-flouride flux and citrus pickle used for cleaner emissions in the studio. 100% post-consumer packaging.

Nancy funk Ceramics

Nancy and Richard are sculptors with a strong interest in surrealism and visual irony. They design and make decorative, functional objects from clay and glycerine soap. The processes they utilize are modeling, hand building and casting. The theme of the piece often dictates the process and often the material. For example, they cast glycerine soap into life molds that Richard made of his son Erik's hand. The resulting 'Hand' soap is a more effective pun because of its life-like detail. Their Sushi soap also illustrates this point. In order to create whimsical, visual alliteration they hand build the sushi using soap.
